RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

In order that we can continue to supply our customers with high-quality plants in the future, the staff of our Research and Development Department employ the most modern biotechnological techniques to create the foundation for breeding Helleborus niger hybrids.

An important part of this work is the maintenance and, when necessary, improvement of the plant stock in terms of homogeneity, growth and resistance to damage from organic and inorganic sources.

By developing and establishing DNA fingerprints for Helleborus we have been able to ascertain the genetic diversity of the available breeding stock in order to select potential hybrid parent plants.

BREEDING

As the vegetative propagation of Helleborus niger yields only a few new plants, propagation is usually done by sowing seeds. As variations in the following generation naturally occur when using this method, Heuger-Blumen's foremost aims are to ensure homogeneity in the plant stock, early flowering, abundant flowers and resistance to disease (especially Coniothyrium hellebori)

The positive results can be seen every winter, and speak for the work in this field that has been done by Heuger for more than 30 years.
The variety of colours in which the Helleborus - hybrids are available (red, pink, yellow, green, blue and white, spotted or wi th stripes) also reflects the sucess of the breeding methods used over the last few decades.

We are engaged in the breeding of Hydrangea macrophylla in co-operation with "Kötter Heinrich KG" and "Agriom BV". Our most important aims are the broadening of the colour palette, favourable growth tendencies, and durability. In order not to neglect the wishes of the nurseryman, we also aim to improve the strength of the stems so that these varieties can be grown without stakes, an obvious advantage for the gardner.
The endlessness of the struggle with scientific matters continually ensures that Man's enquiring mind preserves both its noblest driving forces and is inspired by the new, again and again - enthusiasm and reverence.
